Planning & Construction Updates

September 2014

After receiving the certificate of occupancy, a ribbon cutting was held and followed by an open house to allow students and families to see their new school. It was the first time the community was welcomed into the building. School began as scheduled on September 3. Miscellaneous punch work, commissioning and training continues. 


August 2014

With 95 percent of the punchlist complete, inspections done, and final cleaning and move-in, Fairmount Park was ready for students on the opening day of school. Remaining punchlist items and elevator work were planned for September.


July 2014

Work continues on the punchlist (list of things that need to be finished or corrected by the construction team), testing and balancing of systems, and final cleaning.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, August 2 at 2:45 p.m. 


June 2014

In June, landscaping, pathways and playground pavement were completed. The new classroom addition and renovation of the existing building have been completed with the exception of some loose ends. The school is ready for final cleaning, inspections and commissioning. Delivery begins next month of furniture, fixtures, equipment, curriculum and other supplies.


May 2014

Site work: Concrete and asphalt paving complete on south and west sides.

Classroom addition: Exterior windows complete; paint, floor polishing, ceiling and fixture installation in progress; elevator nearly complete.

Existing building renovation: paint, floor polishing, ceiling and fixture installation in progress; reroofing and sheet metal installation complete; storefront (window wall) installation is complete.


April 2014

In April, work began on the hardscape, bus driveway and loading dock. In the new classroom building, exterior windows are nearly complete and the metal siding is done. Inside, wallboard installation and painting continue; the ceiling grid has been installed throughout the building. Fixtures and trim installation is on going. Renovation of the existing building continues with painting, floor polishing, and ceiling grid and fixture installation in progress. The casework is being installed. Re-roofing is complete and the exterior sheet metal is about 95 percent complete. Installation of the storefront glass is nearly done.


March 2014

The south retaining wall is complete and loading dock revisions are in progress. In the new classroom addition, exterior fenestration installation is 90% complete and metal siding installation is 85% complete. The wallboard has been mudded and painting has begun. Plumbing and electrical rough-in is complete. Fixture installation has begun. Ductwork is complete. Work on installing the trim has begun. The roof is nearly complete. In the existing building renovations continue with boiler piping complete and paint, ceiling grid and fixture installation in progress. The exterior is nearly complete.


February 2014

In the new classroom addition, window installation is 80 percent complete, metal exterior siding is 50 percent complete and roofing is 90 percent complete. The interior framing, electrical, mechanical and plumbing work is ongoing. In the existing building, the boilers are installed and the piping and controls are being added. The interior drywall is nearly complete and interior painting has started. The re-roofing is done and window replacement is 90 percent complete. Site work continues with a separate water line installed for the fire suppression system and ongoing work to modify the loading dock area. Grading for the new driveway is schedule to begin in next month.


January 2014

The exterior walls of the new classroom addition are complete through the weather barrier. Installation is beginning for windows and metal siding. Interior stud framing is complete on the first floor and 15% complete on the second floor. Roofing has begun and is 75% complete. HVAC, plumbing, electrical and fire sprinkler rough-in is 65% complete.

Window installation is nearly complete for the existing east classroom building. Interior wall framing, plumbing and electrical rough-in has been completed. Door frames have been installed and drywall has begun.

At the existing west lunchroom/gym building, the remaining windows at the main entrance are being installed. Metal siding is in progress and interior wall framing is ready for drywall. Ductwork is being completed.

On the site, water service to the building was installed.


December 2013

The structural steel frame, floor and roof decks in the new classroom building addition were completed. Exterior wall framing is 95 percent complete with gypsum sheathing about 75 complete. Ductwork is being installed on the first floor and is 75 percent complete. Interior stud framing, roofing, plumbing, electrical and fire sprinkler rough-in will soon follow.

In the existing east classroom building, window installation is near completion. Interior wall framing, plumbing and electrical rough-in has been completed. When all the windows have been installed, temporary heat will be introduced and drywall installation will begin.

The existing west lunchroom/gym building window installation is underway. Interior wall framing, electrical and plumbing rough-in is 95 percent complete. Mechanical air handling units are being installed and ductwork is being completed.

On the site, the water quality vault was constructed and back-filled.


November 2013

At the new building, footings and foundations were completed this month as well as structural steel erection and the second floor and roof decks. Exterior wall framing at the building is about 50 percent complete. Gypsum sheathing will begin next month. At the existing buildings, interior stud framing is complete. Mechanical, plumbing and electrical rough-in is nearly complete, boilers and air handling units will be installed next. Interior gypsum wall board will be started as soon as the buildings are enclosed and can be heated. Window installation has begun at the existing buildings and is approximately 15 percent complete. The roofing work is 75 percent complete at the existing west building. Storm and sewer installation is 85 percent complete with work installing the new water quality vault at 80 percent complete. Concrete paving in the existing courtyard was completed.

Selective demolition in the existing buildings has been completed. All underground utilities have been installed. Foundation and floor slab for the new addition is 70% complete. Mechanical, electrical and plumbing rough-in in the existing buildings is 25% complete. Sewer and site drainage work is 65% complete. Reroofing of the existing west building is 35% complete. Interior metal stud wall framing has begun.


August 2013

Earthwork and footings/foundations are underway. Mechanical, electrical, fire sprinkler and plumbing rough and ductwork installation in the existing buildings is beginning. Underground mechanical and electrical is 80% complete. Sewer and site drainage work is 30% complete. Structural steel in the existing buildings is 90% complete.


July 2013

Earthwork, utilities and footings/foundations are underway. Stud framing has begun. Mechanical, electrical and plumbing rough in at the existing building is beginning.


June 2013

The land use approval process has been completed, the building permit has been issued and an unrestricted Notice to Proceed has been issued. Selective demolition is now complete. Earthwork is beginning.

The general contractor, Allied Construction Associates, was issued a Notice to Proceed on May 16, 2013.  They began mobilizing to the site and erecting perimeter fencing on May 17th. Their job office is now set up at the end of the west alley. 

 Work completed to date includes:

  • Asbestos abatement
  • Selective demolition of building elements
  • Selective demolition of site elements

Work in progress includes:

  • Installation of underground utilities
  • Land clearing and excavation for the new classroom addition
  • Construction of formwork for concrete walls

May 2013

This month, the construction contract was bid and awarded to Allied Construction Associates, Inc. A pre-construction conference and contractor mobilization will take place in June. Planning is underway for a community meeting. 

September 2014

By ceremoniously cutting the ribbon on September 2, guests, staff and students opened Fairmount Park as an attendance area elementary school for the 2014-15 school year. Following the ceremony, students and families visited the new classrooms, met their teachers and left their school supplies in preparation for the first day of school on September 3.
