Construction Update - September 2011

Dignitaries prepare to cut the ribbon at Nathan Hale on August 30

The project is essentially complete. Green roof installation and bleacher replacement was done this summer. The foundation and pole for the new reader board has been installed. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on August 30, and an all-community celebration is scheduled for October 15.

Work on the mechanical systems will resume when the weather turns colder.

Work is underway on the green roof

Commissioning of mechanical systems and punch list items continues. For the reader board, the city hearings examiner dismissed the MUP appeal prior to the hearing. A permit has been issued and installation will begin shortly.

Site work is substantially complete and landscaping continues to be installed. The vendor is fabricating the new bleachers and demolition of the old bleachers has begun. Work has begun on summer projects, including the green roof on the classroom building.

Landscaping along NE 110th Street as site work wraps up at Nathan Hale High School

In May, commissioning of the mechanical systems continued and the contractor is working on the punch list of corrective work. The reader board Master Use Permit appeals hearing is scheduled for July 5. Site work is substantially complete.

The vendor is fabricating the new bleachers and installation is planned for late June.

Phase 2.5 – Site Work

Concrete sidewalk installation in east parking lot

Installation of concrete sidewalks continues. Asphalt installation and striping of the parking lots was completed. Landscaping continues around the site and in the courtyards. The DPD issued the Master Use Permit (MUP) decision on the reader board. The decision was appealed and a review hearing is being scheduled.

In the next month, site work will be completed including concrete sidewalks, site furnishings and landscaping. The green roof on the classroom building has been rescheduled for the summer break, primarily to minimize the impact on learning and teaching.

Bleacher replacement

The competitive bids were opened for the bleachers replacement project and the city issued the building permit. Over the next month, SPS’s approval process will be completed and the contractor’s shop drawings will be reviewed.

Phase 2.5 – Site Work

Rough grading and utility trenching around the site was substantially completed in March, and lighting, curbs, retaining walls and sidewalks are being installed. During the month, the last portable classroom was demobilized and removed.

Over the next month, the majority of the site work will be completed including curbs, sidewalks, asphalt and granite paving, and parking lot striping. Landscaping work will begin.

Phase 2.4 – Renovation of the Remaining Classrooms, Commons, Band and Choir rooms, Landscaping

When students at Nathan Hale High School returned to school after mid-winter break, they had classes and lunch in their newly renovated spaces. The final building phase of this two and one-half year occupied addition and renovation project was completed on schedule in February.

The just-completed phase (phase 2.4) includes a two-story, tiered “Forum” flexible learning space; eight new science classrooms; nine new general classrooms; renovated band and choir classrooms, and an upgraded Black Box Theatre. In addition, the new, expanded two-story Commons provides a central gathering space as well as housing the new kitchen.

Prior to move-in the contractors wrapped up all remaining finishes, installation of kitchen equipment, mechanical plumbing and ductwork, and lighting. The temporary walls between the construction areas and occupied areas were removed. A celebration and ribbon cutting ceremony will be scheduled in September 2011.

Phase 2.5 – Site Work

All temporary portable classrooms were removed from the east and south parking lots. Rough grading and utility trenching continues in the north courtyard and along NE 110th Street. Final construction work over the next few months will include site work, parking lot upgrades and landscaping.

New science classroom nears completion at Nathan Hale High School

In January, the contractor completed carpet installation and continued to install vinyl flooring. The acoustical ceiling grid is nearly complete and the ceiling tiles are put into place. Lockers were installed, and the mechanical units were started up. Drywall finishing and painting is substantially done, and the work on casework and countertops continues. Work is also continuing on doors and hardware, kitchen equipment, mechanical plumbing and ductwork, electrical wiring and lighting, and window assemblies and glazing. Wood paneling is being installed in the band and choir wing. Landscaping and storm drainage work also continues.

Upcoming work includes finishing installation of: steel handrails and guardrails; exterior windows, acoustical ceiling tiles and wall panels; flooring; casework, countertops and wood paneling; display surfaces including tack boards; and the roof at the south entry. In the kitchen, equipment and appliances will be completely installed. Electrical and mechanical systems will be trimmed out, and furniture will be delivered and set up. Testing and balancing of mechanical systems will begin. Landscaping will be completed in the north and south courtyards.

Construction Update - January 2011

Phase 2.4 – Renovation of the Remaining Classrooms, Commons, Band and Choir rooms, Landscaping

Last month, December 2010, the contractor began installation of casework and countertops in the science classrooms, and installation of carpeting and wood doors in the classroom wing. Work also began on locker installation and landscaping of courtyard #3.

The crews also continued work on natural ventilation cabinets, drywall and finishing, exterior windows, and electrical wiring and lighting installation in the classroom wing.

Work is nearly complete on the seismic and structural steel upgrades in the band/choir room and for display cases in the classroom wing. Other portions of the project that are nearing completion are: interior metal wall framing; acoustical ceiling grid in the classroom hallway; kitchen equipment installation; the permanent roof; and installation of the mechanical and fire/sprinkler systems in the band/choir wing and kitchen.

Upcoming work includes completing exterior windows and glazing, completing the final roofing installation on the classroom wing and completing the rough in of mechanical plumbing and ductwork. The contractor will begin work to install casework, wood paneling, tack surfaces, flooring in the classroom wing, classroom audio/visual systems and classroom display boards.
