Project 3: Demolition of former Denny International Middle School and construction of athletic facilities

In November, the construction team completed the fencing, rain garden, sidewalks, irrigation system and underground utilities. Picnic tables, bike racks, trashcans and other fixtures are being installed. Work continues on landscaping.

Rain garden installation at former Denny site

Project 3: Demolition of former Denny International Middle School and construction of athletic facilities

The softball field synthetic turf and the tennis court surfaces have been completed. Playground equipment is now in place. Installation work began on the fences and the rain garden. Sidewalk work was started. Efforts continue on irrigation, underground site utilities and landscaping. The K-6 playground and amphitheater will be completed in the next month.

Softball field with turf installation complete

Project 3: Demolition of former Denny International Middle School and construction of athletic facilities

Last month, landscaping of the open playfield area began. The contractors also started the installation of the synthetic turf installation on the softball field and the tennis court surfaces. Underground installation of the site utilities continues. The keystone wall, the lower field synthetic turf and fence posts for the athletic facilities were completed. Final grading was done on the non-athletic field areas. Drainage and final grade work was finished on the athletic fields was also finished.

Work in October includes completing the softball field, tennis courts, fence and gate, irrigation, site utilities, K-6 playground and amphitheater and all remaining site work. (The final topcoat on the tennis courts will be applied in the spring.)

Construction Update - September 2011

Project 2: Construction of Denny International Middle School

The project is essentially complete. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on September 6, and the school was open for students on the first day of school on September 7. An all-community celebration is scheduled for September 24 at 10 a.m.

Abatement and demolition of old Denny building in July and August

Project 3: Demolition of former Denny International Middle School and construction of athletic facilities

Demolition was completed at the old Denny site. Cast-in-place retaining walls and storm water detention vault installation were completed. Underground utility installation and rough grading continued. Installation of keystone walls and fence posts began at the softball and tennis courts.

In September, rough and final grading, key wall construction, underground utilities and fence post installation will be completed. The softball field sub-base and artificial turf will be installed.

Construction Update - July 2011

Denny International Middle School after synthetic playfield turf installation

At Denny International Middle School, the playfield synthetic turf has been installed and landscaping continues. Paving and striping of north parking lot is complete.

Furniture, classroom supplies and equipment have been moved from the old Denny Middle School building and the construction fence has been installed at that site. Information on the demolition and construction project was distributed to area homes in mid-June and many community members turned out for a construction information meeting on June 14.

This month (July), the installation of tackable surfaces and wainscoting at the new Denny building will be completed, and demolition/construction will begin at the old site.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony has been scheduled for Tuesday, September 6, 2011 from 1 to 2 p.m. at 2601 SW Kenyon Street (the entrance to Denny on the north side of the Denny/Sealth campus).

Construction Update - June 2011

Installation of a drainage swale at Denny International Middle School

In May, the replacement of the Chief Sealth International High School library high roof was completed.

At Denny International Middle School, the reader board sign was installed, concrete paving was finished in the north courtyard, and installation of the classroom smart boards was completed. Work continues on the subgrade drainage system for the playfield and landscaping of the site. Seattle Fire Department corrections to the fire alarm system are in progress.

In June, fire alarm corrections, landscaping plantings and final cleaning will be completed. The contractors will install synthetic turf playfield and outdoor basketball hoops, as well as complete the asphalt paving of the east road and north parking lot. A traffic circle will be constructed at Kenyon and 26th Avenue.

For project 3, the demolition of the old Denny Middle School, the subcontractor bidding process is complete, the building permit has been received and community outreach continues. Surplus and salvage efforts are also underway.

In June, door hangers with information about construction were distributed to the surrounding homes. The community was invited to visit old Denny for one last look on June 11, and a community meeting to discuss demolition was conducted on June 14. Furniture and equipment is being removed before abatement and demolition occurs. The neighbors have been notified. The construction trailer will also be delivered and set up.

In April, work was nearly completed on the Chief Sealth International High School library high roof replacement. At Denny International Middle School, the contractor completed installation of classroom projectors, casework and flooring, and interior doors and hardware. Work continues on concrete paving in the north Denny courtyard. The greenhouse and toolshed were installed at the Denny wetlands restoration classroom. Fire alarm testing by Seattle Fire Department began.

In May, the Chief Sealth library roof project will be completed. At Denny International Middle School, the contractors will complete landscaping plantings, installation of tackable surfaces and wainscoting, and final cleaning. A traffic circle will be constructed at SW Kenyon and 26th Ave SW.

Denny International Middle School is on schedule to open the first day of school in September.

Landscaping near the main entry at Denny International Middle School

In March, work was underway to replace the Chief Sealth library high roof. At Denny International Middle School, the contractors began installing classroom projectors and continued work on casework, flooring, and interior doors and hardware. The elevator was tested and passed all inspections.

Outside work included completing concrete paving and landscape plantings in the south Denny courtyard, excavating and grading the north Denny courtyard and installation of concrete curb for the playfield. The foundation was poured for the wetlands restoration classroom.

Next month, work at Denny will continue on landscaping, interior doors, marker boards, classroom technology and window blinds. Workers will finish up the handrail installation and the tile and wood ceiling installations, as well as beginning work on fume hoods in the science classrooms. The Chief Sealth library roof will also be completed.

Last month, February, the contractor completed window and exterior panel installation at Denny International Middle School. In the south courtyard, concrete paving and landscape plantings were finished and the excavation and grading began in the north courtyard. The foundations were installed for the wetlands restoration classroom, and a concrete curb for the synthetic turf playfield is complete. The structural steel for the Denny International Middle School reader board was installed.

Interior drywall work at Denny is now complete, and the lockers, toilet rooms and light fixtures have been installed. The elevator has been installed and testing has begun. Classroom projectors are being installed. Casework, interior doors and flooring installation continues.

At Chief Sealth International High School, staging began for the replacement of the library high roof, and graphic signage was installed on the exterior of the auditorium.

Next month, stair handrails and ceiling installation will be completed at Denny, and the library high roof replacement will be completed at Chief Sealth. Throughout the month, work will continue at Denny on flooring, window blinds, classroom technology, and landscaping, and installation will begin of fume hoods in the science classrooms.

Second floor science lab under construction at Denny International Middle School

In January 2011, the contractors completed the green roof project at Denny International Middle School. The installation of the exterior wall panels is nearly done and window installation continues. The gym floor is now complete. Interior work, including drywall, paint, light fixtures, lockers, and toilet rooms, is ongoing. Sitework is proceeding at the main entry courtyard, the classroom courtyards and the play area.

Planned work for the next month includes completing the drywall, mud, taping and painting, continuing locker installation, and continuing installation of casework, plumbing and lighting. Sitework will continue, and installation of exterior panels and windows will be completed.

Last month, December 2010, the contractors continued exterior panel and window installation at Denny International Middle School. Inside, work continued to install drywall and light fixtures, as well as installation of lockers, toilet rooms and gym floors. Painting continues as drywall work moves through the building. Mosaic tiles were installed in the Galleria/Commons. The green roof project is nearly complete, and site work continues on the main entry courtyard, classroom courtyards and the play area.

In the next month, the contractor will continue work at Denny. Planned work includes completing the drywall, mud, tape and paint inside; finishing installation of the exterior panels and windows; continuing site work and progressing on the locker installation. Casework, plumbing and light fixture installation will also continue.
