Construction Update - November 2009

Project 1B - The new Library/Arts addition

Project 2 – The Modernization of the Main Building

Project 2 Phase 2.2 – Interior of new business education classroom under construction

Project 2 Phase 2.2 – Interior of new business education classroom under construction

During October 2009, structural steel upgrades for Phase 2.2 were completed, as was the sawcutting of the concrete slabs and the exterior, and concrete pours in the floor slab openings. Work continued on rough-in of the mechanical plumbing, ductwork and electrical systems. Work started in Phase 2.2 on interior metal wall framing, concrete masonry unit (CMU) walls at the bathrooms, installation of shotcrete reinforced walls, and door frames.

Construction will continue this month with the completion of the rough-in of mechanical and electrical systems in Phase 2.2 and the start of mechanical and electrical rough-in through the existing hallways. The contractor will also complete the installation of the metal stud wall framing and door frames. Work will start on the installation of drywall, painting, the exterior storefront systems, and the permanent roof above Phase 2.2.

The Nathan Hale Greenhouse

Seattle Public Schools is planning to build a new 3,000 square foot greenhouse for Nathan Hale High School on the adjacent Jane Addams K-8 campus in early 2010.

Greenhouse Handout Site Plan

Why?

The City of Seattle is planning to demolish the old greenhouse located on nearby City property to make way for an expanded Meadowbrook Pond and riparian habitat in late 2010.

Where?

The new greenhouse will be located on the Jane Addams campus, chosen because it is adjacent to Hale, has sufficient space for the program, proper exposure to sun and would foster collaboration between the schools. The old dilapidated one-story shop building behind Jane Addams will be demolished to make way for the greenhouse.

Sustainable Features

The new greenhouse will employ sustainable features including rainwater capture and storage, insulated glass and low flow plumbing fixtures.

Funding

The project is funded by the Nathan Hale High School project under the Building Excellence III bond approved by the voters in 2007.

Impact

The new greenhouse will not impact use of the sports fields behind the Jane Addams School.

The completion of Project 1B (new library, radio station, art classrooms and fitness center) was celebrated on October 3rd with an open house for students, staff, alumni, and community members. As part of the event, the entire school was open for self-guided tours including the old building, allowing one “last look” before it is remodeled as part of the next construction phase. KNHC C89.5 is moving into their new space and will begin broadcasting from the new location in October.

Project 1 – The new library/arts addition

The Project 1B contractor, Absher Construction, has been working furiously since November on the new library and arts addition and renovation project.  The old print shop building (Unit D) has been completely gutted and is currently undergoing seismic retrofitting.  To the west and south, the contractor is excavating and installing the foundation for the new addition.

During Winter Break, some corridor ceilings were demolished in the main building so the contractor can install fire sprinkler and natural gas piping to serve the new addition.  The contractor has also demolished part of the Women’s PE Locker Room and adjacent shower and bathrooms where the new addition will attach to the main building.

Project 2 - The Renovation

The project team is continuing design of Project 2, which is the renovation of the main building including the offices, academic core, cafeteria and commons, and athletic facilities. Fall Construction Update - October 2008

Project 1 – The New Library/Arts Addition

The Project 1A contractor Condon-Johnson has completed installation of the 50-foot deep auger-cast piles for the new library/arts addition on the east side of the building (see attached photo). Condon-Johnson also placed and compacted over 900 tons of rock in the courtyard to make a stable construction work pad for the upcoming wet weather season.

We appreciate the understanding of students and staff who were impacted by this work, and are pro-actively planning with the next contractor to mitigate potential noise and vibration from construction activities.

Project 1B is scheduled to start in early November and be completed by fall 2009. This includes the new library, art classrooms, KNHC radio station, and a new fitness center.

Project 2 - The Renovation

The project team is continuing design of Project 2, which includes the renovation of the main building including the offices, academic core, cafeteria and commons, and athletic facilities. The design team recently met with the School Design Team (SDT) to discuss student lockers, a new reader board location, exterior courtyards, and the student Activity Center (AC). The design team also met with staff in Project 2 to discuss the design of their spaces.
