Construction at Chief Sealth High School and the new Denny International Middle School – Crane lifts structural steel into place – 11/6/09
As of the end of October 2009, 60% of the structural steel needed for the construction of the new Galleria and Denny International Middle School had been delivered to the construction site. Footings for the new Galleria and Denny school are now 90% complete as are the underground utilities for the Galleria. In the existing Chief Sealth High School building, the contractor completed framing walls on the first floor and is 70% complete with wall framing on the 2nd floor. The contractor continued work on the mechanical, electrical and plumbing rough-in in the Chief Sealth building.
This month, November, 2009, work will continue on the foundation and walls for the new Denny International Middle School. Deliveries of the structural steel for the new Denny School will continue as will the steel erection of the Commons area. The contractor will continue framing walls in Chief Sealth High School. Site work will continue on the south and west sides of the project.

New Denny International Middle School Gymnasium - reinforcing steel and vapor retarder for the structural concrete slab subfloor for the new wood athletic flooring
As of the end of September, 2009, the new Chief Sealth boilers are complete and awaiting the final report. The installation of the sewer line and water on the north end of the project was completed. The old Chief Sealth courtyards have been demolished and the contractor began framing walls and completing mechanical, electrical and plumbing rough-in in Chief Sealth High School.
The contractor is 80% complete with the installation of the footings for the new Galleria and Denny International Middle School and 75% complete with the underground utilities for the new Galleria. The contractor also began erecting walls for the new middle school gymnasium.
This month, October, 2009, work will continue on the foundation and walls for the new Denny International Middle School. Concrete Pour at Building C (new Galleria) Brace Frame Footing
Last month, August, 2009, the contractor completed the sub-grade work for the new Denny International Middle School. The contractor also completed the initial work inside the existing Chief Sealth High School as well as the retaining wall along the east side of the property. The contractor completed a deep sewer tie-in into a manhole in SW Kenyon Street.
This month, September, 2009, work will continue on the foundation for the new Denny International Middle School. The site asphalt paving at the south end of the project, the parking lots and new drives, will begin and work will continue on the short aggregate pier work and deep sewer line. The contractor will also continue work on the installation of the sewer line and water on north end of the project. Structural steel for the Galleria started arriving and deliveries for the new Denny International Middle School will continue into October.

Denny-Sealth Short Aggregate Pier drilling for the new Denny School & Galleria/Commons Foundation
Last month, July, 2009, the Project 1 contractor completed the retaining wall along the east property line as well as continued work on the sewer line along with east property. Grading for the north parking lot was started and will be completed by the first week of August.
This month, August, 2009, work for Project 1 will include site asphalt paving at the north parking lot and east road.
For Project 2, installation of the short aggregate piers will be completed by the end of this month. The Project 2 contractor is starting the interior renovation of the main classroom building for Chief Sealth. Foundation work will also be starting in August along with site work including grading, excavation and underground utilities for the new Denny school.
Installation of some storm sewer piping and connecting to the existing sanitary manhole in SW Kenyon Street, 260 feet east of the SW 26th Avenue intersection will take place August 10th through the 21st. The new utility will serve the new Denny Sealth campus scheduled to open in fall, 2010. No other utilities will be impacted by this work. Pedestrian and vehicle access to homes adjacent to the work zone will be maintained during the street closure. Detour signs will be up to direct all other traffic during construction hours.

Last month, June, 2009, saw the start of grading work to prepare the foundation for the new Denny International Middle School and the new galleria. The contractor removed the remaining portables and the new gas service was turned on.
This month, July, 2009, work will continue on the foundation, utilities and the retaining walls. Work will begin on the commissioning of the new boiler as well as the installation of the improvements to Chief Sealth including electrical and mechanical upgrades to the classrooms.

The Seattle Public Schools’ Denny International Middle School and Chief Sealth High School construction project has been granted a Master Use Permit to begin major construction work. This phase of the construction work, Project 2, will begin in June and will include the construction of a new middle school and the renovation of the existing Chief Sealth High School. The co-located campus will include:
Chief Sealth is scheduled for completion in summer, 2010, ready for the fall school year. Denny International Middle School is scheduled to be completed by winter, 2011.
During this phase of construction, there may be heavy equipment used along the streets immediately surrounding the construction site. There is no street work planned during initial construction activities. When street work is planned, we will provide advance notice to any neighbors that might be affected by that work.

Installation of the Gas Line at Chief Sealth High School
Last month, April 2009, the remaining building pre-work construction, in addition to the gas and water lines, were completed. April also saw the beginning of preparation of mobilizing for the next phase of construction, Project 2, which includes the modernization of Chief Sealth, the construction of the new Galleria and the new Denny Middle School.
This month, May, 2009, the gas meter will be installed and the new boilers will be tested. Part of the mobilization you will see will be the Project 2 contractor bringing their trailers and equipment on site to begin work.

Last month, March 2009, saw the completion of much of the pre-work construction at Chief Sealth High School. This phase included hazmat abatement, structural reinforcing, demolition at the Chief Sealth site and the installation of a new mechanical system including new boilers.
